Fall Open House
Our first open campus event at Gordon was wonderful!
Amidst the backdrop of the flourishing tomatoes, sunflowers, and zinnias, Grace had the opportunity to share the vision of Newroz and ask for input from the visiting students. Everyone was able to enjoy apple cider, fresh veggies, and fill out trivia questions about the garden; there was even a raffle for a mason jar filled with zinnias and sunflowers. Needless to say, the winner of the raffle was surprising and rather ironic (it was me). After the initial meeting, we opened up the garden for exploration. Grace gave a tour of the produce while Corinne explained to some students how she took care of her herbs.
We had a wide range of visitors: from volunteers that had helped with the garden previously, interested newcomers, faculty (Dr. Story) to those that simply came to pick cherry tomatoes.
I think that the best aspect of the event was the open environment we provided; rather than a structured event, it was an opportunity for students to simply enjoy the garden as well as each other's company. I find that there is an underestimated joy and satisfaction within the simple activities of the garden: mindlessly picking cherry tomatoes, looking under leaves to find squash, or observing the bees on a sunflower.
Come join us during our next open house event on April 9th!
