Rehabilitation Phase 2: Cardboard and Wood Chips

A quick break from fences to confront the invasive weeds in the garden...

In order to effectively remove the weeds from the garden, Alden recommended that we overlay the entire plot with cardboard and pile wood chips on top. Over time, the cardboard would decompose and in the meanwhile, the weeds would die out. When it would be time for our planting, we would break through the cardboard where we dig out the garden beds. The wood chips were provided by Mark Stowell from physical plant.

This process took a lot of cardboard; more than the average human being witnesses in their average day, week, or probably even month. We visited multiple recycling bins around campus, and some of us even drove around the surrounding neighborhoods to collect what cardboard we could. At the end of our collecting, we found that there was a disproportionate amount of pizza boxes in the recycling bins around Wenham.
