Rehabilitation Phase 3: New Fencing and a Gate
The beginning of of a new creation...
Alden surprised us with two beautiful new gates a couple days ago! It is amazing how much change a door can make, even though everything is technically outdoors. Yet, the door signifies the entering of a space, just as the fences surrounding it will come to signify that there is a purpose and intent behind this small plot of land.
The fencing process took the longest out of the three phases of rehabilitation. Luckily, the weather was starting to ease into spring, invigorating our work with the buzz of everything coming to life again.
Within the process of fencing, there were quite a few subdivision of procedures. These can be divided into four general parts: weaving two metal poles through the fencing, sawing the poles at the length needed after careful measurement, hammering stakes to secure the fence to wooden posts, and carrying the fence over to the garden's posts to drill them into one another. Below are slideshows showing each step.
1) Weaving the pole through the fencing
2) Sawing the poles of the fencing
3) Hammering stakes to secure the fencing to wooden posts
4) Drilling the posts to one another
...and we're finished with our preliminary tasks! Nothing could beat the feeling of hearing that last screw squeak into place.
We are so excited to see what we have accomplished only after a little over two weeks. A special thank you to Alden and all the volunteers who helped out with this process. The reality is that none of this would have been possible without the assistance of each hand and the cooperation that worked to restore this garden back to a state of dignity. The garden is not merely a plot of land, but a living space for us to come together and work towards a common goal. It has truly been a great two weeks and we can only imagine where Newroz will go from here.
